Actress Aditi Rao Hydari was among the first few who talked about hypocrisy in Bollywood while addressing the #MeToo movement that hit the nation sometime back. The actress has now opened up on what the movement has left us with and how a lot of work still needs to be done.
While speaking at the India Today Conclave South 2018, she revealed that even she had to choose between sitting idol or ‘compromising’ for work once and she proudly chose not to compromise. She said, “I was extra naive when I joined the industry. There was an incident that did not harm me so much, but it still had an impact on me. I had to make a choice, and obviously, for me, the choice was clear. I chose not to submit. I did not find work for eight months. I snapped out of it. Today, I’m working with people I want to work with”.
The Rockstar actress also expressed that women shouldn’t be forced to speak up about the harassment they have faced. She is of the opinion that women should be encouraged and not forced to share their stories. She said, “If you force people to speak, you’re turning the moment on its head. People are more aware, but there needs to be more conversation”. She continues:
The whole #MeToo movement was brought in India by actress Tanushree Dutta. She talked about a decade old case where she had allegedly faced sexual harassment t the hands of veteran actor Nana Patekar. The actress accused the actor of behaving inappropriately with her on the sets of film Horn OK Pleasss, in 2008. After Tanushree spoke up, many other women from the film industry also came forward with their stories. Actor Alok Nath, filmmakers Sajid Khan, Luv Ranjan and casting director Mukesh Chhabra among other prominent names were accused by women under the movement.
